Yesterday, I met a German friend who commutes between his homes close to Hamburg and in Campbell for ADOBE, several times a year. He did not only give me authentic German ryebread from a bakery in Watsonville (so far, I haven't found really good "Graubrot" that satisfied my high expectations), he also gave me the CD, "Boheme" from a rising star on the German pop scene:
Annett Louisan. Her voice stands out from the mediocre pop crowd. You either hate or like it. I actually love it. It is a young voice with this kind of Lolita naughtiness of a girl who has just turned into a woman.
What is even more fascinating for me than her voice are her lyrics. The truth she speaks or better sings out, completely surprised me because this is grown-up, mature text. I needed to reach my mid forties to come to the same results and be brave enough to live, love, and speak out loud without the safe mask that norms us in our society and makes it tough for anyone who lives different to be happy.
Annett sings about how sorry she is that her fling fell in love with her and got hurt while she only wanted to play; she sings about a man's cat who will never belong to him but purrs when he pets her; she sings about the Dad who was never there to tell her that she makes mistakes and that her boyfriend is not good enough for her, she sings that she is bothered as well by what her boyfriend cannot come to terms with and which is still a part of who she is, and she also sings about the day she is in the mood to say yes to the marriage proposal of her lover and tells him not to wait until tomorrow when she might not longer be willing to get domesticated.
If I ever have the chance to listen live to this 5 feet mermaid like fragile girl-woman, I will definitely do so.
Hi, do you remember the name of that bakery? My baking mixes are starting to run out. It is really hard to have a discenring taste for bread around here.
