Finally I visited the place, all Germans who survived the seventies know, thanks to Michael Holm's bad hit in which he sang about a pretty hitchhiker he droped off in Mendocino and lost there when, madly in love with the unknown beauty, he tried to find her again.
I understand why he picked this picturesque mekka of artists, harley riders, tourists and real estate gamblers on the California Northern Coast for the song that tortured my ears for a decade. Mendocino is a beautiful, I would even say spiritual place with breathtaking views, art galleries, Victorian homes, and the peace you can only find in the country.
In the the coming entries I will write some more from my great weekend trip with Peter and the wonderful places we have discovered.
Meeeendocino, ich warte jeden Tag in der heissen Sonne...

Even though I've lived in California for some 30 years I'm somewhat embarassed to admit that I was unaware of a town or village called Mendocino. And so, when my sisters informed me at lunch Saturday that there was in fact a "town" and not just a county with the same name, my thinking took a sharp left turn from Highway 101 toward the coast. Mucho brownie points for Silvia who endured a barrage of Schmidts at Saturday's impromptu lunch (Mom & Dad, sisters Mary & Gretchen.. and me). This woman is very brave.
Just wanted to mention here that Silvia is not actually propping up the somewhat skewed Medocino sign but she is in fact holding on for dear life as cars, trucks and buses speed dangerously nearby. It was nice for me that we were NOT in any kind of a rush this weekend, but I did buy a bumper sticker in Fort Bragg that reads "I bet JESUS uses HIS turn signals".

Thanx for providing the background information. I better don't tell them what stickers I bought. Maybe later :-).
Your family is very nice and made it very easy for me to meet them - no braveness was required.
