Cool! A lot more poetic than anything I ever write.

BTW, you should trackback-ping my post.

Silvia

How am I doing that? :-)

fling93

Oh, okay. This is a more complicated.

You use a trackback ping so that your blog will tell my blog that you've linked to it. My blog well then create a link back to yours in the "Trackback" section at the end of the post, before the comments. For example, sQurl trackback-pinged my "Gender Balance" post, so you now see a link to her post at the end of mine. This is so readers can see what other bloggers are saying about a post, and is particularly useful for memes like this.

The way I do it in MT is to copy the "Trackback URL for this entry" of the post that you are linking to (this is listed in the "Trackback" section of my post) into your post form's "URLs to Ping" area. The blog software will do the rest when you save the post. You can ping more than one post (for example, Ellison's post).

You should only trackback blog *posts* that you link to, not blogs. So you should probably change your link to my front page into a link to the permalink (permanent link) of the specific post (this is because the posts on the front page keep changing).

This is the permalink (you can also find it by clicking my post's title or the "Permalink" at the bottom of the excerpt):

The Trackback URL of that post is here:

Can you see where this appears on my post, before the comments? This is what you copy and paste into the "URLs to Ping" form.

Yeah, copying and pasting is kind of a pain. There's a more automated way to do this, but I haven't figured it out. Also, different bloggers put their Trackback URLs in different places. Ellison has it in a popup window that appears when you click the "Trackback" link at the bottom of the post. I don't know where your blog has it. I think maybe you didn't configure the blog to allow trackback pings to you. If you'd like those, you should enable it, but that shouldn't affect your ability to ping other blogs.

If this is too confusing, maybe me or somebody else can demonstrate it at the next meetup.

Oh, and one more thing. You should also pass on the punchbowl poetry meme to three other people. :)

I am halfway there, thanx fling. I allowed trackbacks, found something like trackback list. I changed the href value to your
blog into the permalink you gave me. Left to find out how I turn my entry into a permalink. I have an entire weekend. Oh, and I have to find three victims to dare, that's right.

Oh, your blog automatically generates permalinks for your posts. The main thing you have left is to trackback ping my post by pasting my post's trackback URL into your post's "URLs to ping" form (and finding three victims).

BTW, the enabled trackbacks only apply to new posts. If you want people to be able to trackback ping older posts, you'll have to rebuild your individual archives. But this probably won't matter to you, since older posts are generally less likely to be linked to anyway.
